Online therapy
Teletherapy, also known as virtual therapy or online therapy, is an accessible and convenient way to engage in psychotherapy.
Whatever your reason for choosing online therapy, you can take comfort from the fact that studies show that it is just as effective as in-person therapy, and in some cases maybe even better. Online therapy removes the added stress of a commute. It can match the intimate setting of a therapy office, yet you don’t have to leave the familiarity of your own space.
I use Zoom for online therapy and coaching sessions. Zoom is a secure and easy-to-use HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform that is simple and secure for users. It does not require any downloads or special software and can be used on a computer, tablet or cell phone. In advance of your session, I will send you instructions and a link for entering the virtual waiting room.
Online sessions are no different from in-person sessions, in that they provide a safe and supportive environment in which we can explore things together and make progress on your goals. If you are wondering whether online therapy is a good fit for you, let’s schedule a free 15-minute consultation and you can decide for yourself. Many people are pleasantly surprised at how much they prefer it to in-person therapy. For those interested in Brainspotting, this service is available and is extremely effective in an online appointment.

FAQs About ONLINE Therapy
1. What are some of the benefits of online therapy?
Accessibility: Teletherapy gives you greater access to high quality psychotherapy services. I work with many clients who live or work in the NYC area and beyond. Online sessions eliminate the time lost traveling to and from an office. They’re a great option for busy professionals, creatives with wacky schedules, parents, and college students.
Comfort: You can participate in sessions from the comfort of your own home or a private work environment.
Savings: You save time and money by not having to travel to an office. This eliminates costs associated with missing work, paying for childcare, and commuting.
2. How does online therapy work?
Once you have scheduled an appointment, we will provide you with a link to access the online therapy “room.” All you need is a quiet and comfortable space that is equipped with good internet access, and a smartphone or computer with a camera. Comfort is key, so consider a setting where you feel relaxed and secure, and won’t be interrupted, like a private room in your home.
3. What happens if there are technical difficulties?
A good wifi connection is important. Ensure you have a stable internet connection to avoid disruptions during sessions. We also recommend choosing a secure wifi network instead of a public one. Sometimes, there are technical issues like video freezing or getting disconnected. We will talk during your first session about what to do if this happens.
4. What if I get distracted?
It’s a good idea to minimize distractions by turning off notifications on your phone or computer and keeping your focus on the session. Let household members know you need privacy, if applicable, to avoid interruptions. The effectiveness of therapy, whether online or in-person, largely depends on the quality of the relationship between client and therapist, which is related to your active participation and openness to the process.
5. Can I do online therapy regardless of where I am located?
We are licensed in New York State and work primarily with people who live and/or work in New York. I am also a Registered telehealth provider for clients based in Florida. All states require psychotherapists to hold a valid license to practice that has been issued by the state’s relevant professional board. If you are living outside of the United States, online therapy may be an option. Coaching services are available worldwide.
6. What if I am traveling outside of New York? Can we still have online therapy sessions?
The answer is sometimes yes. However, it depends on where and for how long you will be traveling. We can discuss this as the need arises.
7. Is online therapy an option for me?
Teletherapy is not recommended for everyone. If you are struggling with keeping yourself or others safe (e.g. intense suicidal ideation, high-risk substance abuse), in-person sessions are very important.
8. What if I have a mental health emergency?
As with in-person therapy, emergencies can and do arise. If you are having thoughts of imminently harming yourself, you should call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. Help is also available at the national Suicide Hotline: 1-800-SUICIDE.
